Custom Soil in Connecticut — Built to Spec for Stormwater, Trees, Sports & Landscape Projects
Grillo Services produces engineered and custom soil blends for projects that can’t rely on “generic dirt.” Whether you need bioretention soil, rain garden soil, CU structural soil, lightweight roof planting media, athletic field materials, or a custom garden mix — we can blend to meet the performance level and maintenance needs of your site.
How Custom Soil Ordering Works
- Tell us the application: bioretention / rain garden / street tree / sports field / roof planting / turf paving.
- Share the spec (if you have one): gradation, % organics, infiltration targets, pH, etc.
- Confirm quantity + timeline: one yard to full state-scale orders.
- Delivery logistics: access, low wires, tight turns, dump location, and preferred delivery window.
What “Built to Spec” Typically Means
Engineered soils are usually defined by performance (drainage/infiltration), composition (sand/topsoil/organic matter ratios), and consistency (screening/gradation). For stormwater media, specs commonly call for a sand-dominant blend with controlled organic content and topsoil percentage.
- Gradation / screening: consistent particle size for predictable performance
- Organic content: enough to support plants, not so much it clogs
- Drainage: designed to drain and recover between events
- Documentation: mix details can be provided for submittals when required
CU Soil (Structural Soil)
Structural soil is engineered to support pavement design requirements while still being root penetrable and supportive of tree growth — ideal for urban tree pits, sidewalks, and hardscape-adjacent plantings.
- Street trees / urban tree pits
- Under sidewalks, plazas, and pavers where rooting volume is limited
- Projects that need compaction performance without “choking” roots
Bio Retention Soil
Engineered planting media for bioretention cells (rain gardens / stormwater treatment). Designed to accept runoff, filter pollutants, and support plant health.
- Bioretention basins, infiltration planters, stormwater treatment areas
- Often spec’d with sand/topsoil/organic ratios and gradation requirements
- Commonly paired with underdrains and clean stone layers
Rain Garden Soil
Porous planting media for rain gardens designed to accept and drain stormwater quickly after rain events. Great for residential and municipal rain garden installs.
- Residential rain gardens
- Municipal/HOA stormwater plantings
- Designed for drainage + plant support
Lightweight Roof Planting Media
Lightweight growth media for roof planting applications where weight and drainage performance matter. Used for green roofs and roof planters.
- Green roofs / roof planters
- Weight-sensitive installations
- Consistent performance for spec-driven projects
Red Ballfield Clay
Athletic field material that can be customized to match maintenance level and performance needs for the facility.
- Baseball/softball infields
- Field repair and seasonal conditioning
- Facility-specific blending available
Reinforced Soil
All-weather natural turf surface material for applications from pedestrian walkways and athletic fields to emergency access lanes and turf paving.
- Turf paving / access lanes
- Athletic & high-traffic turf areas
- Projects requiring stability under load
Spec & Submittal Checklist (Fastest Way to Quote)
If you want the quickest quote and the smoothest delivery, send us the details below. Even a partial spec helps — we can fill in the gaps.
- Project location: town + site access notes (tight turns, low wires, restricted dumping area)
- Blend needed: CU structural / bioretention / rain garden / roof media / athletic field / custom garden mix
- Quantity: yards or tons + delivery schedule (single drop vs staged)
- Spec requirements: gradation, % organics, pH range, infiltration targets (if applicable)
- Testing/submittals: if required by the job (tell us up front)
FAQ
Can you match a municipal/engineer specification?
Yes. If you have a spec, send it over (gradation, organics %, sand type, pH targets, etc.). If you don’t, tell us the application and we’ll recommend a proven blend.
Do you deliver custom soil across Connecticut?
Yes. Delivery depends on product, volume, and scheduling. For standard delivery details and truck info, see: Delivery Rates & Truck Info.
Can I order small quantities?
Many customers pick up smaller quantities at the yard. For engineered mixes, availability may vary by production schedule — call and we’ll confirm.
