Description
Mesotrione Starter Fertilizer with Crabgrass Preventer 21-22-4
Mesotrione Starter Fertilizer with Crabgrass Preventer 21-22-4 is a premium combination starter fertilizer and weed control product made for turf establishment. It is a strong choice for homeowners and contractors who want to feed new grass while helping suppress selected weeds during seeding and overseeding projects.
With a 21-22-4 analysis and 0.08% mesotrione, this product is designed for use when establishing new turf on labeled grass types. It gives new grass the phosphorus-rich starter feeding it needs while helping reduce competition from certain weeds during early establishment.
Best Time To Use
- Best window in Connecticut: mid-August through mid-September for new lawn seeding and overseeding
- Second-best window: late winter or early spring when you are starting or repairing cool-season turf
- Use timing: apply as the last step in the planting or overseeding process
This product is most useful when you are establishing new grass and want starter fertilizer and weed suppression at the same time. For most Connecticut lawns, fall is the strongest timing window, while spring can still work but is usually a little tougher because of colder, wetter soil and heavier weed pressure.
Application Rate
- Standard broadcast rate: 4.3 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft.
- 40 lb bag coverage: approximately 9,300 sq. ft.
- Water in after application: 1/4" to 1/2" of irrigation or rainfall within 3 days is best
How The Rate Changes By Goal
For this product, the label is straightforward: the main broadcast rate is 4.3 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. That means this is not a product where you really adjust the rate up and down based on whether you want a “light” or “heavy” feeding. The bigger decision is timing.
- If your goal is new seeding or overseeding: apply at 4.3 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. at planting
- If your goal is extended weed control: a second application can be made 6 weeks after the first, according to label directions
- If your goal is routine feeding on an established lawn only: this is usually not the first product to reach for unless you are also seeding or renovating turf
Why Customers Choose It
- Starter fertilizer and weed control in one product
- 21-22-4 analysis for turf establishment
- 0.08% mesotrione for weed suppression during seeding and overseeding
