Description

Not Landscape Mulch. Playground Safety Surfacing.

Regular mulch is designed to look good in beds. Playground mulch is designed to protect kids. This is an all-natural, IPEMA-certified wood fiber surfacing material made specifically for use under play structures, swing sets, slides, and climbing equipment. When installed and maintained at the proper depth, it helps cushion falls and provides a safer landing surface than bare ground, grass, dirt, or standard landscape mulch.

Sold by the yard at our Milford yard. Available for pickup or delivery across Fairfield County, New Haven County, and much of Connecticut.

Why Certified Playground Mulch Matters

This isn’t about aesthetics — it’s about impact protection. Here’s what sets certified playground mulch apart from ordinary mulch.

IPEMA Certified

IPEMA certification means this product has been independently tested and validated against ASTM playground surfacing standards for impact attenuation. It’s not just mulch that happens to be under a playset — it’s engineered wood fiber verified for playground safety use.

Cushions Falls at Proper Depth

When installed and maintained at the recommended depth, playground mulch absorbs impact energy and helps reduce the severity of injuries from falls. Depth is the key variable — the material only works if there’s enough of it.

All-Natural Wood Fiber

No rubber, no synthetic material, no chemicals. This is a natural wood product that looks and feels like a natural outdoor surface — not a rubber mat. Kids play on it, dogs walk on it, and it blends into the landscape naturally.

Cost-Effective vs. Rubber or Tile

Poured rubber surfacing and interlocking rubber tiles can cost several dollars per square foot installed. Certified playground mulch provides ASTM-tested impact protection at a fraction of the cost — making it practical for homeowners, not just commercial installations.

Where to Use Playground Mulch

Any area where kids play on equipment and falls are possible.

Backyard Playsets & Swing Sets

The most common residential use. If your kids have a playset in the yard, certified playground mulch under and around it is one of the most practical safety upgrades you can make.

School Playgrounds

Schools across Connecticut use IPEMA-certified surfacing to meet safety guidelines. Playground mulch gives schools an affordable, natural option that’s easy to install and maintain.

Daycares & Childcare Centers

Daycare licensing and safety inspections often require certified playground surfacing. IPEMA-certified mulch satisfies that requirement with a natural product that’s straightforward to install and replenish.

Churches & Community Centers

Any organization with outdoor play equipment for children benefits from certified surfacing — both for actual safety and for liability awareness.

Parks & Municipal Play Areas

Town parks, recreation areas, and public playgrounds. Bulk playground mulch is a cost-effective surfacing solution for municipalities managing multiple play sites across Fairfield and New Haven County.

Dog Play Areas

Some homeowners use playground mulch in dedicated outdoor dog zones where a softer, natural surface is preferred over dirt or gravel. It drains well and provides a cushioned surface for active dogs.

Depth Matters — How Much Do You Need?

Playground mulch only works if there’s enough of it. Depth is the single most important factor for safety.

For equipment up to 8 feet, a maintained depth of 9″ is commonly recommended. Because loose fill settles and compacts, many installations start at 12″ to maintain 9″ over time. For equipment under 4 feet, 6″ is often used as a minimum.

Depth Coverage Per Yard Use Case
6″ ~54 sq. ft. Minimum depth for equipment under 4 feet
9″ ~36 sq. ft. Recommended maintained depth for equipment up to 8 feet
12″ ~27 sq. ft. Initial install depth to maintain 9″ after settling

Measure your play area’s length and width, then call (203) 877-5070 — we’ll calculate the exact number of yards you need based on your equipment height and target depth.

Installation Tips

Getting this right matters. A few things to keep in mind.

Use Proper Edging

Install landscape timbers, rubber borders, or another containment system to keep the mulch within the play zone. Without edging, material migrates out of the fall zone and depth decreases faster.

Rake and Level Regularly

Kids kick mulch out from under swings and at the base of slides. Rake displaced material back into high-traffic zones regularly to maintain even depth across the entire play area.

Top Off Annually

Loose-fill material settles and decomposes over time. Check depth at least once a year — especially under swings, at slide exits, and at the base of climbing walls — and add fresh material to maintain proper protection.

Depth Is Everything

Don’t judge by appearance — a play area can look fully mulched but be too thin to provide adequate fall protection. Use a ruler or stick to check actual depth in multiple spots. If it’s thin, add more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IPEMA certified mean?

IPEMA (International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association) certification means the product has been independently tested against ASTM standards for playground surfacing impact attenuation. It’s a third-party validation that this material meets recognized safety benchmarks for playground use.

Can I use regular mulch under a playset?

You can, but regular landscape mulch is not tested or certified for fall protection. If safety under play equipment is the goal, IPEMA-certified playground mulch is the right product. It’s specifically designed and tested for that purpose.

How deep should playground mulch be?

For equipment up to 8 feet high, a maintained depth of 9″ is commonly recommended. Because material settles, start at 12″ for new installations. For equipment under 4 feet, 6″ is often used as a minimum. Always check and replenish regularly.

How far should the mulch extend around the equipment?

The use zone typically extends at least 6 feet in all directions from the equipment. For swings, the zone extends further in the direction of swing travel. Measure your area and call us if you need help calculating the right amount.

Is this better than rubber mulch?

Both can work for playground surfacing, but they’re very different. Playground mulch is natural, affordable, and easy to replenish. Rubber mulch doesn’t decompose but costs significantly more, can retain heat in direct sun, and some parents have concerns about chemical content. For most residential playsets, certified wood fiber is the practical choice.

How often do I need to add more?

Check depth at least once a year and after heavy use periods. High-traffic spots — under swings, at slide exits, at the base of climbing walls — lose depth faster and need topping off more frequently than the rest of the area.

Do you deliver playground mulch?
